Cheeto's Trail-Ready
Checklist

If you've ever wondered whether your cat could enjoy a harness, a trail, or even a backpack ride, you're in the right place.

Trail walks were only where we started. Cheeto and I are training for car rides, camping, travel, and even the move to our next home—and we'll be sharing what we learn as we go. This is where we keep it honest: what worked for us, what we would do differently, and what we would choose again.

Below you'll find the gear Cheeto genuinely uses, the products we recommend, and the brands we trust. You don't need everything on this page to begin. Start wherever you and your cat feel comfortable, and come back whenever you're ready.

Complete Leash & Harness Set
Essential

BuddyArmor Cat Harness & Leash Set

A cat-designed Y-shaped harness and lightweight leash set that keeps pressure away from the neck.

Trail notes

What should you look for in a cat harness for outdoor walks? BuddyArmor grew from its designer's experience of a pet going missing, and it's one of the brands I trust because the gear feels genuinely designed with cats in mind. This adjustable Y-shaped harness distributes leash pressure away from the neck and pairs with a lightweight leash. Cheeto wears the olive-green set, and I still check the fit before every outing.

Trail Collar
Peace of Mind

BuddyArmor Safety Collar for Cats

A lightweight, adjustable cat collar that pairs with Cheeto's harness and optional tracking accessories.

Trail notes

What makes a good safety collar for an adventure cat? BuddyArmor designed this lightweight, adjustable collar for cats, with comfort and anti-loss accessories in mind. Cheeto wears it in olive green with his matching harness set. Tracking accessories are sold separately, and the Apple AirTag is linked below.

Sold Separately

Apple AirTag for the BuddyArmor Cat Collar

An optional extra layer of location awareness for the BuddyArmor collar—not a replacement for proper identification.

Trail notes

Can an AirTag help locate a cat? When it is nearby and connected to a compatible iPhone, Find Nearby can help pinpoint it. Farther away, its map location updates when another Apple device detects it through the Find My network, so it is not continuous GPS tracking. The AirTag is an additional purchase for the BuddyArmor collar above—an extra layer of peace of mind, not a replacement for a microchip, identification, or a secure harness and leash.

Apollo Walker Pet Carrier Backpack
Essential

Apollo Walker Cat Backpack Carrier

The backpack that carries Cheeto on every hike and offers the best balance of comfort, ventilation, and space we found.

Trail notes

What makes a good backpack carrier for an adventure cat? For Cheeto, this is his den away from home—if I leave it open, he climbs inside and meows at me for a walk. It opens multiple ways, has plenty of airflow, and the window placement lets him see out while sitting or lying down. The large pockets have practically turned it into my trail purse, but things can fall out when I squat, so I never keep anything breakable in them. There may be better carriers, but this is the one we use.

Hydration

Collapsible Water Bowl for Cats

Any sturdy, easy-to-clean option works—choose one that fits your pack and your budget.

Trail notes

How do you give a cat water while hiking? A lightweight collapsible bowl clips to your pack and gives your cat an easy place to drink without taking up much room. Carry water separately, and look for a bowl that's sturdy when open, simple to clean, and appropriately sized for your cat.

🧼

Paw Care

Cat-Safe Paw & Coat Wipes

A cat-safe option for quick cleanup after dusty or muddy trail walks.

Trail notes

What wipes are safe to use on a cat's paws and coat? For ordinary trail dust or mud, a damp cloth may be all you need. If you prefer wipes, choose a grooming product labeled for cats and follow its directions—never use household disinfecting wipes. The cat friendly wipes can be handy for a quick cleanup after a dusty trail loop.

Grooming

Self-Cleaning Cat Slicker Brush

A practical brush style that makes regular grooming and fur cleanup easier.

Trail notes

Is a self-cleaning slicker brush worth it for cats? The release button makes cleanup much easier by pushing collected fur off the pins, so you don't have to pull it out by hand—especially convenient when loose fur bothers your allergies. Look for sturdy pins, a comfortable grip, and a release button that holds up to regular use.

EquiGroomer 5-Inch Deshedding Brush
Grooming

EquiGroomer 5-Inch Deshedding Brush

A gentle grooming tool for cats and small pets that removes loose, dead hair without pulling healthy fur or irritating delicate skin.

View on Amazon
Trail notes

The EquiGroomer's short grooming edge catches loose, dead hair while smooth, healthy hair slides past, making it gentle enough for regular use on cats. Use short strokes with steady pressure to lift shedding hair, dirt, and dander and help keep the coat soft and shiny. Our post-walk routine is simple: praise, dust Cheeto off, check his coat and paws, then clean the groomer. If a burr or sticker is embedded or irritating the skin, don't tug at it.

Trail Rewards

High-Value Lickable Cat Treats

A high-value reward for harness practice, post-walk praise, and other big experiences.

Trail notes

Are lickable treats good for training cats? They're especially useful when you need your cat to stay focused for a little longer, such as during harness practice, and they make a great reward after a walk, bath, or other big experience. Cheeto goes so wild for them that I use calmer treats for most precise training—choose a reward your cat loves without becoming too distracted to learn.

Tiki Cat Born Carnivore Dry Cat Food
Nutrition

Tiki Cat Born Carnivore Dry Cat Food

A carnivore-focused dry food whose small kibble also works well for calm, precise training rewards.

Shop Tiki Cat on Amazon
Trail notes

What should you look for in a high-protein dry cat food? Ingredients are what sold me on Tiki Cat Born Carnivore—it's one of the most carnivore-focused foods I've found, surprisingly affordable for an ingredient-driven formula, and I appreciate how actively the brand engages with its community. The small kibble pieces also work as calm training rewards when you're building trust with a food-motivated cat. Cheeto runs to his bowl when the automatic feeder goes off and loves it enough that he didn't even skip a meal after his neuter. Check the label for a complete-and-balanced formula suited to your cat's life stage.

360° Tangle-Free Retractable Leash
Optional Upgrade

360° Retractable Leash for Experienced Adventure Cats

An optional long-range leash for experienced cat-and-handler teams in familiar, controlled settings.

View on Amazon
Trail notes

Can an experienced cat use a retractable leash? I reserve this one for skilled cats and handlers with a strong relationship, clear communication, and a familiar trail or private property. Its tape has held up for more than a year around cacti, brush, and trail debris, and it comes in cute colors. It isn't a necessity or a beginner tool: keep it attached to a secure harness, stay attentive, and choose a fixed leash whenever you need closer control.

Pezzy Single-Ingredient Conservation Treats

Conservation-minded, single-ingredient treats made from invasive species that help protect native ecosystems.

Shop Cheeto's Store
Trail notes

Can pet treats support conservation? Pezzy makes single-ingredient treats from invasive species, including devil fish, lionfish, silver carp, and Nilgai antelope. That creates a useful purpose for animals that can disrupt native ecosystems while supporting small-scale fishers, hunters, and their communities. I carry them in Cheeto's Store because they're simple treats with an environmental purpose—exactly the kind of product I want on our shelves.
